  Height Does Matter

by : Robbie Pangilinan

The Human Growth Foundation says that parents are more often concerned when their children are shorter than their age-mates than when they are taller, although most short children fall within the normal range of height.

These days, height does matter. "Iba na ang matangkad!" says a popular television commercial. And one factor that helps boost children's height potential is vitamins.

Enersel Forte contains Chlorella Growth Factor responsible for height development among children. It also has the elements Taurine and Lysine to maintain health, vitality and well-being.

Enersel Forte is the first and only multivitamins with Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) that enhances the body's immune system by giving it antibacterial and antiviral properties through the release of lauric acid. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which helps in dealing with harmful viruses and bacteria. VCO is known to help increase the body's metabolism, and is a quick source of energy.

Enersel Forte is SEL-J Pharmaceuticals Corporation's multivitamins for children and young adults with a unique formulation of Vitamins A, B-complex, C, D, and E, and minerals Niacinamide and Zinc.

With Enersel Forte, the New, Revolutionary Formula for Giftedness, children and young adults can excel in sports, academics, arts and music, and other fields.

"Since we started covering pediatricians, general practitioners and family med doctors, Enersel Forte is being prescribed. Coupled with free clinics and a sensible school program, it is also recognized and bought by parents of children aged 6 months to 12 years old," SEL-J Pharma Chief Executive Officer Jay Lacnit says.

When SEL-J launched Enersel Forte, the company also held a medical mission for children in Laguna, where free medicines and vitamins were given after consultation with physicians.

Carrying the tagline ENERgy and Strength Essential for Life, Enersel Forte is available in Mercury Drugstores, Southstar Drugs, independent drugstores and dispensing clinics in 120 and 250 ml bottles.

Healing the World
  by : Robbie Pangilinan

He is no doctor, but he plays a major role in the field of medicine. The President of one of the Philippines' most active and aggressive national pharmaceutical companies today knows that his is a noble business – the business of healing the sick.

"When we launched our company and our portfolio, we presented ourselves to the medical community in such strong statements, believing that we had every right and reason to be part of the pharmaceutical business," Jay Lacnit, President of SEL-J Pharmaceuticals, said. SEL-J Pharmaceuticals is a relatively new player in the prescription market, although it has long been known for its major role in government business. Since its establishment in 1998 in Pagadian City, SEL-J has been supplying a large chunk of healthcare products in government institutions through tenders and bids.

It started as a small drugstore when the Generics Law had been passed in Congress. Then opportunities to distribute healthcare products came and doors were opened to source affordable medicines from local importers based in Manila. SEL-J transferred to Manila in 2001 and in 2008, the Ethical Division was created to penetrate the private prescription market. In 2009, SEL-J expanded its products to high-generation injectable antibiotics. Lacnit admits that all these would have been impossible to achieve if not for the hardworking people behind SEL-J. He says he is not very hands-on in the business because he believes that the people who work for him are good, trustworthy and highly capable. In fact, he says that his top marketing strategy is having experienced people and good products that conform to the highest standards of quality.

SEL-J is possibly the only pharmaceutical company which submits its products for bio-assay tests at the National Institutes of Health, Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of the Philippines. Results prove that SEL-J products are equivalent to the innovator drugs. "We want to create an impression that we can be the best in the industry, and we believe that sooner we will be able to achieve that," Lacnit beams.

SEL-J keeps its prices competitive, sometimes substantially lower to ensure that Filipino patients get the medicines they need. SEL-J has committed itself to helping Filipinos afford the increasing costs of healthcare.

Another thing that sets SEL-J apart is its sports development strategy. Believing that sports is a key component of health and wellness, it established SEL-J Sports in 2009 to be at the forefront of the battle against disease.

SEL-J is not all business. It is a company with heart. It was one of the first private companies that responded to the government's call during the Ondoy and Pepeng tragedies. SEL-J distributed relief goods at ULTRA, Marikina, Laguna and as far away as Ilocos and Baguio. It is involved in church-planting in the Visayas where it supports pastors. It also donates drugs and medicines to poor communities.

Lacnit, considered a visionary, is guided by this philosophy: Put patients at the core of your job, be relentless in pursuing ways not only to satisfy your customers, but delight them in the highest level. The most important lesson he has learned in running this business is that everything boils down to people: employees, customers, doctors, and patients. With these in heart and mind, Lacnit and SEL-J Pharmaceuticals is in the right business – of healing the sick, and eventually, helping to heal the world.

SEL-J Pharma Joins 2009 PSMID with Lecture on Quality

SEL-J Pharma Corp. organized a luncheon symposium during the Annual National Convention of the Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID) held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ortigas Center, Pasig City, last November 26, 2009.

Dr. Cecile Maramba, M.D., M.Sc.I.D., a University of the Philippines’ top infectious disease expert, lectured on the topic “The Hunt for Quality Antibiotics in an Era of Global Manufacturing” to more than 300 participants and delegates of the PSMID Congress.  Dr. Maramba cited and commended national companies like SEL-J Pharma Corp. for having introduced into the local market a portfolio of products that adhere to and pass stringent requirements of quality and safety, including systems and procedures on GMP, storage, warehousing, and distribution.

Dr. Maramba highlighted her lecture with slides on certificates of Good Manufacturing Practices of SEL-J Pharma products from the World Health Organization, as well as excellent local assay results conducted on SEL-J Pharma portfolio from the University of the Philippines National Institutes of Health.  A Certificate of Approval from the University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital was also shown, citing SEL-J Pharma products as having been evaluated and certified to have conformed to the standards set by the Drug Evaluation Subcommittee of the UP-PGH Drug Committee.

Noel Fortin, SEL-J Pharma Vice President for Marketing and Sales, cited in his parting words after Dr. Maramba’s lecture that SEL-J Pharma Corp. is a national Filipino company that will never compromise the quality and integrity of their products, especially in terms of safety and efficacy.  He also reiterated the company’s vision to bring healthcare products into the Philippine market that will address the nagging and burning issue on compliance, especially with the very high costs of hospitalization and medication.  He said that as one of the country’s biggest importers of drugs and medicines, SEL-J Pharma is well positioned to keep the prices of their products at the affordability level of Filipinos, with an assurance of excellent quality and bio-equivalence to innovators and leading products.

› SEL-J Pharma Launches Divisionalization Strategy in 2010

As part of the business building and growth strategy of SEL-J Pharma Corp., two divisions of the Ethical team were created and launched in January 2010.  Led by its Vice President for Marketing and Sales Noel Fortin and National Sales Operations Manager Gary Magdamit, the salesforce was divided between Hospital Team, which is focused on driving the injectable antibiotics category in key hospital formularies across the country, and the Primary Care Team, which handles the cardiologics and oral preparations and penetrates key retail channels like big-value chains, drugstores and pharmacies, and industrials.

A key component of this grand strategy is the recruitment of Professional Sales Executives (PSEs) and District Sales Managers, which to date, already totals 60 PSEs and 7 DSMs.  Majority of the recruits came from multinational companies and have had extensive experience in the pharmaceutical business.

Jay Lacnit, SEL-J Pharma Corp. President, has envisioned that the total salesforce will reach 100 by the end of 2010, especially as more products in key therapeutic areas will be included in the company’s portfolio.  OTC products are also in the pipeline to boost the armamentarium of SEL-J Pharma, especially multivitamins, cough and colds preparations, fluids, etc.

SEL-J Pharma Penetrates More Hospital Formularies & Big Value Chains

SEL-J Pharma sales and marketing managers, led by Vice President Noel Fortin and Sales Operations Manager Gary Magdamit, launched a massive placement and distribution strategy in more major hospital formularies in Metro Manila and key cities as well as in big value chains and retail channels for their portfolio of injectable and oral antibiotics, cardiovasculars, pain medications, and anti-fungal preparations.

Armed with products that are supported by cGMP documentations, US-FDA approvals, ISO and quality certifications and bio-equivalence studies, SEL-J Pharma Corp.  trained all its ethical sales employees and equipped them with strategies, tactics and operational plans in getting their portfolio of products not only widely distributed but also aggressively prescribed by healthcare professionals.

SEL-J Pharma Expands Operations in Central and North Luzon

SEL-J Pharma Corp. has expanded its business operations by opening more territories in Central and North Luzon.  Five experienced sales personnel from big pharma companies were hired to boost the presence of the company and push its portfolio of antibiotics and cardiovascular drugs in the region.

A newly-formed pharmaceutical company, the National Ethical Pharma Corp. (NEPC), secured the distribution rights to handle sales and distribution of SEL-J Pharma in Central and North Luzon.
